Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and USPS, UPS and FedEx have published their official shipping deadlines for the season. The tracker above starts with those official carrier dates. Pick a carrier, a service and a destination, and it shows the last day to ship, the number of days left and every other service on the same carrier in order. Retailer order-by dates are estimates until the stores publish their own tables.

Where the 2026 dates come from

Carrier dates in the tracker come from the USPS holiday mailing page, the FedEx peak last-day-to-ship schedule and UPS holiday guidance for 2026, and each carries an "Official" label. For the other services, such as DHL and the retailers, we count the business days between last season's cutoff and the final delivery day before Christmas, then count back the same number of business days from Thursday, December 24, 2026. A service that needed five business days last season gets the matching estimated date this year, and every estimated date is labeled "Estimated, based on prior-year schedules; we update when carriers publish."

Retailer order-by dates work the same way, but start from the dates stores actually published for Christmas 2025 because stores release their dates later than carriers.

The 2026 calendar: what a Friday Christmas does to deadlines

December 24, 2026 is a Thursday and December 25 is a Friday, the day federal employees observe the Christmas holiday. Carriers do not deliver on Christmas Day, so Thursday, December 24 is the last delivery day, and ground services need to be in the mail well before the final week: the official USPS Ground Advantage date is Thursday, December 17, and UPS and FedEx Ground cutoffs run from December 17 to December 22 depending on distance. Priority Mail follows on December 18 and Priority Mail Express on Saturday, December 19. We recommend treating Thursday, December 17 as your personal deadline for anything you cannot afford to be late.

Express options, such as UPS Next Day Air and FedEx Standard Overnight, have their cutoff on Wednesday, December 23. Their cutoffs depend on airline capacity and are the most likely to change, so do not rely on them unless you have no alternative.

Carrier by carrier: what to know

USPS publishes "recommended send-by dates" rather than guarantees. For 2026 the lower 48 dates are December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express, with Alaska, Hawaii and territories needing one earlier day for Ground Advantage. International mail closes much earlier, with December 9 for most First-Class Package and Priority Mail International destinations.

UPS does not pick up Ground packages on Christmas Eve, and its air services need advance arrangement. UPS Ground cutoffs depend on the transit time between the two ZIP codes, so a package crossing the country needs to ship earlier than one traveling a few hundred miles.

FedEx publishes a table for each service with the last ship date for one-to-five-day transit zones. Ground Economy has the earliest cutoff of the major services, and SameDay is the only service with a Christmas Eve cutoff.

DHL serves mainly international and e-commerce shipments in the United States, and its Express cutoffs depend on the destination country. DHL is closed on Christmas Day. Our DHL dates are estimates, since DHL does not publish a single consumer table.

Retailer order-by dates and free shipping

Retailers set their own cutoffs, which are usually later than carrier cutoffs because they ship from nearby warehouses. In the 2025 season Amazon's free standard shipping ended on December 15, Prime two-day on December 22 and Prime one-day on December 23. Walmart, Target and Best Buy offered a mix of standard, next-day and same-day options with the last same-day pickup on Christmas Eve. For 2026 we apply the same business-day rule. Remember that third-party marketplace sellers follow their own schedules, and a delivery date at checkout always overrides any general estimate.

How to use the return tracker

Scroll to the return tracker section of the tool. Choose a store, enter the date you bought the item and, if the store lists special categories such as Apple products or electronics, choose the matching item type. The tracker applies the standard return window and, where a holiday extension exists, picks the later of the two deadlines. You can add the return to a list on your device and download a calendar reminder that fires three days before the window closes.

Five habits that protect you from missed deadlines

Order shipped gifts by the first week of December, even if the cutoff is two weeks away, because weather and volume slow the network in the final stretch. Ship to the recipient directly with a gift receipt instead of sending it to yourself first. Choose a carrier by the cutoff for the slowest zone your package crosses. Take a photo of the label and tracking number. If you are late, switch to digital gifts, experience vouchers or in-store pickup, which our last-minute gift guide covers in detail.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the last day to ship for Christmas 2026?

It depends on the carrier and service. The official 2026 dates are December 17 for USPS Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail, December 19 for Priority Mail Express, between December 17 and December 22 for UPS and FedEx Ground depending on distance, and December 23 for overnight services. Use the tracker for your exact carrier, service and destination.

Which dates are official and which are estimated?

USPS, UPS and FedEx dates are official for 2026. Retailer order-by dates and DHL are estimates built from prior-year schedules, and we replace them when the companies publish their own tables.

Do USPS, UPS and FedEx deliver on Christmas Eve 2026?

Christmas Eve is a Thursday, and carriers have historically delivered that day, but UPS does not pick up Ground packages and some services run reduced operations. None of them deliver on Christmas Day, so treat Thursday as the last possible delivery day and check each carrier's announcement.

    Are these guaranteed delivery dates?

No. USPS describes its dates as recommended, and carriers can change cutoffs because of weather, volume or operational changes. Treat each date as the latest sensible day and ship earlier whenever you can.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

Look for services with later cutoffs such as overnight air, local same-day delivery or in-store pickup, or switch to a digital gift or an experience voucher that you can deliver by email.
